Today, I have lost all faith in the BYU student body (at least that enjoy Randy Bott's mission prep class). Dr. Hudson sent me this article this morning. Highest-rated professor in the nation?? That is so unnerving.
I agree, because it perpetuates the myth that BYU is a second-rate religious school. Sure, religion is a part of the curriculum and lives of the students, but BYU is an incredible academic institution that excels in many, many areas of study. Did Mom tell you that she told someone the other day you were majoring in women's studies and international development and the woman couldn't believe that BYU offered a major like that. Crazy. That's why you have to go to grad school somewhere else and show the world how awesome BYU is. Every time Christopher meets someone fabulously important because he's the Darden golden boy and they ask him where he went to undergrad and he says, "Brigham Young," they are visibly surprised, because you know they expected him to say something Ivy League-ish. But the engineering program at BYU is one of the top in the nation, along with many others.
Agreed! Yes! I think the most frustrating thing besides the fact he's a sexist man is that come on, that class is so easy and not intellectually-stimulating by any means. Professors in other departments with actual, real PhDs and knowledge and research should be getting news coverage, not some old fart who happens to tell funny stories. And speaking of women's studies.... the Women's Research Institute may be shut down at BYU because it's apparently not important enough for funding. Talk about looking bad to other universities... we all wrote letters in support of the WRI to Pres. Samuelson. We haven't heard yet what the decision is, but we are seriously hoping. I think the WRI is not just a second-rate institution either. We have the WomanStats project along with a host of others, the Women's Studies Minor with the amazing professors and rigorous classes. And it's not my major. BYU doesn't have that major. I'm a poli sci major, women's studies, international development minor. BYU is not quite that progressive yet.
